Run a finger along the inside of a window pane. Dust, faint haze, or fingerprints are the norm here — most people clean windows a couple of times a year, if that. It’s one of the easiest things to overlook simply because you look through windows, not at them.
The tell: if a room feels slightly dimmer than it should on a sunny day, hazy glass is often the quiet culprit.
2. Baseboards
Get down at floor level and look along the base of your walls. Baseboards collect dust constantly, but they sit below eye level and outside the path of a regular vacuum or mop pass.
The tell: run a white cloth along the top edge. If it comes away gray, it’s been a while.
3. Ceiling Fan Blades

The tell: turn the fan off and check the top of each blade, not just the visible underside.
4. Light Fixtures
Overhead fixtures, glass covers, and lamp shades trap dust and, for open fixtures, dead insects — but they’re rarely at eye level and even more rarely dusted. It’s a different problem from fan blades: fixtures also affect how much light actually reaches the room.
The tell: if a fixture looks dimmer than the bulb wattage suggests, the glass or shade is likely due for a clean.
5. Light Switches and Door Handles
High-touch, low-visibility. These are handled dozens of times a day by everyone in the house, yet they’re one of the last things anyone thinks to wipe down.
The tell: they often look fine visually, which is exactly why they’re skipped — the buildup here isn’t dust, it’s everyday touch.
